History of slot machines

The predecessor of modern slot machines was invented in 1891 in New York. Back then it was a machine with five drums holding cards. The player inserted the coin, pulled a lever to spin the drums and see what poker combination would turn. There was no direct payout system back then and the machines were installed in bars at the time. So the winner was payed with drinks or smokes by the bartender — depending on the menu of every particular bar.

The first slot machine as we know it today was invented by Charles Fey in San Francisco, back in 1887. He intended to develop an automatic payout mechanism, which would allow the machine to perform all the payouts to the player. But it was virtually impossible when using poker cards, because of numerous card combinations. So, Charles Fey got rid of the poker card system and introduced just five symbols instead. The number of spinning drums was also reduced to three. That made it possible for the machine to perform all the payouts according to a payout schedule.

The first slot machine that didn't require and attendant to perform the payouts was introduced in 1964. The first video slot machine with a second-screen bonus came out in 1996.
